Build your own home-made projector

Found a possible way to get cheap projection displays suitable for some of the pieces we are envisaging. see this link for an overview and the demo video here. Perhaps we could link this approach in with the fibredisplay too. Thanks to Nima Kaveh for this suggestion.

I think Kai did this already in Ipswich. I am not sure about the state of the project but he has all parts together and working…

The links dont work, but searching THG for Projector found the relevant pages. It looks entirely possible to do what it says and produce our own projectors for reasonable outlays. Is it worth talking to the BOYD people for old & small LCDs?

What is it with me and links? More copy paste errors. I really shouldn’t rush these things. Fixed now. I agree we should talk to the Bring Out Your Dead people about recycling crappy monitors, and maybe there are OHPs going as well.

OK. My suspicion is that OHPs are so unfashionable these days that we should be able to get hold of them easily and cheaply. Maybe we need to form a Display ad-hoc group and go and see Kai (whom I dont know…)

Got another link from Nima, The Mark III Projector from the DIY Projector Company, and these guys will give you most of the parts in kits backed by instructions, seems to be around $350 for everything except the LCD screen itself, or a bit more if you want the gutsy 400W lamp.

I might well buy one of these kits to experiment with.

Once I’m happy how it all fits together we can save on enclosures and probably other parts.

From what the people at Tom’s Hardware Guide (THG) say, most of the ‘kits and instructions are not very good - especially the ones sold on eBay. So I’d advise caution and careful evaluation before buying, but you knew that anyway.
